Beef Bone Marrow Benefits

Just to say that these are my views and what I have found through research of the low carb ketogenic lifestyle. I am not pretending to be a qualified nutritionist or diet advisor. These are just my thoughts.

Bone marrow, the soft mushy stuff inside bone, is considered a delicacy in many kinds of cuisine. It contains a high percentage of fat (about 96%) but also many beneficial qualities, leading to potential health benefits. These include building immunity, repairing wounds, helping with digestion and even fighting cancer.

Did you know that a University of Michigan-led study showed that the fat tissue in bone marrow is a significant source of the hormone adiponectin? This hormone helps maintain insulin sensitivity, break down fat, and has been linked to decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity-associated cancers.

Did you know that bone marrow is full of essential fatty acids? Bone marrow consists of mostly monounsaturated fat. It also contains less amount of polyunsaturated fat and conjugated linoleic acid which is known as a potent cancer inhibitor. Bone marrow is a great source of omega-3 fatty acid which is essential for the proper functioning of the brain. Bone marrow is also a good source of glycine, which is an amino used to make and repair other proteins in the body.

Did you know that bone marrow contains lots of vitamins and minerals? Including calcium, iron, phosphorous, zinc, selenium, magnesium, manganese, and other mineral-Laden chemicals. It also contains Vitamin A in its complete form.

How to add bone marrow into your diet:

  • You can go caveman by roasting it and eating it.
  • Spread it on toast and serve similar to pate with a chutney.
  • Add to broths and soup
  • Make your own bone marrow butter and add to cooked meat or fish, letting it melt
